Hi, nice pics of the swallowtail. The great thing about planting flowers for butterflies is that we humans get to enjoy them too. I personally like the smell of lavender. I recently read that lavender attracts the black swallowtail! Thanks for treating us to the great pics.

Thanks for your kind words and the website! I've taken a lot of photographs of bees on lavender, but I haven't captured many butterflies enjoying lavender yet. Cathy

Kristy - start here:

or here:

Truthfully it takes a lot of work to actually play host to creating the correct environment that would enable a butterfly to go to chrysalis and subsequently hatch. I (we) just let nature happen not to mention the fact that we are obviously doing our part to maintain a good habitat for them.

Hello! I came across your blog after researching the web for info on caterpillars. I live in South Carolina and yesterday, I discovered caterpillars had devoured my entire crop of planted parsley! I had thought the 15 caterpillars were monarchs, but after reading your blog, I AM certain they are swallowtails! A few weeks ago, I discovered a swarm (about 25 or more) of beautiful black butterflies with bluish purple bottom wings all sitting on a...I know this is gross...but a black rotten banana that my 3 year old had left on a bench in the back corner of my yard. I tossed the banana in the compost pile (about 25 feet from my parsley) after the lovely little creatures fluttered off. And now, we have caterpillars everywhere! So, my question is...what shall I do to hatch these guys into butterflies? I my daughter LOVES butterflies...she had a blast chasing them from flower to flower! I'm an enthusiast now! I want to know more about these creatures! Definitely don't want to kill them!! I would love to see this amazing metamorphosis!! If you could email me, I would greatly appeciate your advice!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts!! Thanks! Kristy Graham
