On our way to Mount Magazine State Park in northeastern Arkansas in May, we drove through the charming town of Paris, Arkansas. I’m glad I wanted to take a photo of the court house, or I would have missed the Eiffel Tower mural. (My husband, who was driving, has so much patience.)
There are more than 20 cities and towns in the United States named Paris. Most sites list the number as 23, but others credit Paris towns that have been re-named, such Beresford, South Dakota, which was known as Paris, Dakota Territory until 1884. The only other Paris that I’ve visited, other than Paris, France, is Paris, Texas. According to Wikipedia, there’s a 70-foot Eiffel Tower replica in the Texas Paris with a red cowboy hat on top, but I haven’t seen it in person — yet.

What about the Eiffel tower in Las Vegas? That’s real, ain’t it?

Yes, I took some photos of the Vegas Eiffel Tower, too, and thought about including it, although it’s not in a town named Paris. I’m adding it now!

My photo of the Statue of Liberty outside New York New York isn’t very good. I need to do a post on Statues of Liberty around the world. Sounds like a big project.

Yes, all of these cities want their little piece of romance! I wonder how many of these towns have some version of the Eiffel Tower?

What an interesting post, Catherine. I agree with the comments, t’would make a wonderful post to highlight the Eiffel Towers throughout the States (regardless of their townships). Just as a by the by: I was enormously surprised by the ‘size’ of the Eiffel Tower (in Paris); it was way bigger than I’d ever imagined…!

I need to make a return trip to Paris. I was there only once, many many years ago.

Fun post Catherine. Terri and I have visited all 50 states, but as I look at your list, I realized that I’ve only been to one of these cities (Paris, KY). Your list could be a great quest for a future road trip, and also have Eiffel Towers as the secondary objective. ~James

I’ve been rifling through my old photos and not finding many good photos of Eiffel Towers (And Statues of Liberty) in towns I’ve visited in the past, so I definitely need to visit all of these places again. (Perhaps, the internet will have to help me out….on a virtual tour of some of the remote ones)

Cathy,
What an interesting post. I just learned yesterday, coincidentally on the radio, that there’s a town called Paris in Ontario, your neighbour up north, and it’s named “cobblestone capital of Canada”, and even “the prettiest town in Canada”. And it’s so beautiful, at least from the pictures on its site. Here’s the link. Take a look and I’m sure its serene beauty and character beat the cosmopolitan atmosphere of many ‘Parises’.

It looks like I need to spread my net wider for all of the Parises in the world. Paris, Ontario, definitely needs to be on my itinerary. Thanks for the link.

I did not know there were so many Paris. I knew of Paris, Texas and Tennessee and visited Paris, Kentucky – but Paris in Georgia? I tried to Google it but never could find it – it may be an incorporated place here in Georgia. In my next post on San Francisco I’ll show an Eiffel Tower that was in Union Square once. You know, growing up in Paris, France, I never had any idea that it was such a famous place, for me it was just home. My mother kept telling me we were in one of the greatest cities in the world – I thought she just exaggerated because she was born there.

Very cool that you grew up in Paris, France. I look forward to your post on San Francisco. My husband lived there as a young child and we always like to visit there.
We often don’t realize the special aspects of where we grow up until later. You, though, grew up in a place more special than many! You’re mother was right!

Thanks for visiting. I think I may do a virtual world tour, starting at the beginning of the alphabet. It’ll be interesting to discover how each town is named, too. Did the founders of the towns hope to bask in the reflected glory of their namesakes? Not sure I’m using “namesake” correctly. But you get the idea! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namesake
